Overview:  Hotel and motel managers are in charge of businesses that rent rooms to customers.

Hotel and motel managers run room rental businesses. Duties vary with the size and type of the business. In large hotels, general managers are in charge of the entire hotel. They set room rates, monitor income and expenses, and supervise other staff.

    Nationally, the number of jobs for hotel and motel managers is expected to grow slower than the average through the year 2008. Jobs will be available as workers retire, transfer to other positions, or leave the field. Some people leave the field because of long hours or because of the high amount of contact with customers. Opportunities are very good for people with college degrees in hotel or restaurant management.


Preparation

Most hotel and motel managers learn their skills through formal training programs. Community and junior colleges and some universities offer two or four year degree programs. Technical institutes, vocational and trade schools also offer formal programs. These programs may be from one to two years long. Most hotel management programs include classes in accounting, marketing, and food service management. Computer skills are taught in many of these classes. Since computers are used on the job for billing, reservations, and scheduling staff.
