Bass Brewers
Subsidiary of Interbrew
Bass Brewers makes some of the UK's favorite libations. The region's #2 brewer (after Scottish & Newcastle) holds nearly 25% of the market with brands such as Carling (the UK's #1 brew), Caffrey's, Grolsch (licensed), Hooper's Hooch, and Tennent's Lager. Bass Brewers exports beer and ale to about 80 countries; its Bass Ale is the #1 imported ale in the US. Bass Brewers rang up more than 30% of sales for its former parent Bass PLC. Bass PLC sold Bass Brewers to Belgian beer giant Interbrew in late 2000. However, UK regulators later declared the deal anticompetitive and ordered Interbrew to find a new buyer for Bass. Later still, a UK High Court ruled against the forced sale but failed to resolve competition issues.
