More than a small-town institution, International Dairy Queen (IDQ) franchises more than 5,700 Dairy Queen fast-food restaurants, which feature burgers, hot dogs, fountain drinks, ice cream, and frozen treats. The company also franchises about 370 Orange Julius stores (blended fruit drinks) and more than 30 Karmelkorn stores (popcorn and other treats). IDQ, which operates primarily in the US and Canada, was acquired by investment king Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway in 1998. It is looking to expand the Dairy Queen brand on the east and west coasts in the US , as well as internationally. The first Dairy Queen franchise store opened in 1940.
