Zanett (formerly Planet Zanett) knows that bagels don't make good life preservers. Drowning in a sea of debt following its expansion, the company switched gears in 2000 with its acquisition of Internet investment firm Planet Zanett Corporate Incubator. The company then invested in online businesses developed in conjunction with offline operations. Now, with the late 2001 acquisition of BBT Technology, the company is focusing on consulting for its companies. It spun off its bagel business to a subsidiary that continues to license or franchise 300 bagel, muffin, and coffee shops under the brands Big Apple Bagels, Brewster's Coffee, and My Favorite Muffin.
