Let them drink wine! E. & J. Gallo Winery brings merlot to the masses. The world's largest wine maker makes about 25% of the wine sold in the US, thanks in part to its inexpensive jug brands Carlo Rossi and Gallo as well as the fortified Thunderbird brand. The vintner cultivates 3,000-plus acres in Sonoma County, California; makes its own labels and bottles; and is the leading US wine exporter. It imports and sells Italian wine Ecco Domani and is a leading brandy producer. Gallo once only sold wine in the low-to-moderate price range, but has successfully expanded into premium wines such as Turning Leaf and Gossamer Bay, which don't have the Gallo name on the label. The Gallo family owns the vintner.
