S c h o l a r s h i p s



These scholarships have been established in the names of individuals or organizations who hold fund raising events outside of the Beard House or who provide funds for their scholarship.

Applicants applying for a scholarship requiring an essay may ignore similar questions on the application form.

Completed scholarship applications must be postmarked by May 1, 2003.

Applications can not be submitted on-line.

 AAA Five Diamond Scholarship

$5,000 towards tuition at an accredited culinary school of his/her choice. Applicant must submit a 500-word essay on culinary goals and how this scholarship can help attain them.



Simone Beck Memorial Scholarship
(Sponsored by Paul Grimes)


$500 scholarship towards expenses for applicant beginning the study of French cuisine at a culinary school in
Europe . The approval of the school is at the discretion of the James Beard Foundation scholarship committee.



Alberto Bello Scholarship


$1,500 scholarship towards tuition for applicant making a career change and entering The Institute of Culinary Education (formerly Peter Kump's New York Cooking School, where Mr. Bello was a student).



Becoming A Chef Scholarship
(Sponsored by Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg)


$1,000 scholarship towards tuition at an accredited culinary school of student's choice.



Chatham Bars Inn Scholarship, (

$3,500 scholarship towards tuition at an accredited culinary school of the studentıs choice.



CHIC Scholarship

One (1) $2,000 scholarship towards tuition for the one semester CORE Curriculum classes at the Culinary and Hospitality Institute of Chicago. Based on financial need. Applicant must maintain a perfect attendance record and work 600 hours in a professional kitchen.



Patrick Clark Memorial Scholarship
(Sponsored by the James Beard Foundation President's Council)


Two (2) $2,000 scholarships towards tuition for the two-year AAS degree from the Hospitality Management program at New York City Technical College. Applicant must reside in the Bronx , Brooklyn , Manhattan , Queens or Staten Island and substantiate residency.



Bryan Close Polo Grill Scholarship

Tulsa , OK )

Four (4) $1,000 scholarships towards tuition at an accredited culinary school of studentıs choice. Applicant must be a resident of
Oklahoma and substantiate residency. Applicant must have had at least one year of culinary experience either as a student or an employee.



Gino Cofacci Memorial Scholarship for Baking
(Sponsored by Nick Malgieri)

$1,000 scholarship towards tuition for foreign culinary education. Applicant must have applied for an extensive culinary course. Approval of the course is at the discretion of the James Beard Foundation scholarship committee



Artie Cutler Memorial Scholarship
(Sponsored by Michael Ronis)


$4,000 scholarship towards tuition at an accredited culinary school of student's choice. Applicant must submit a 500-word essay on culinary goals and how this scholarship can help attain them.



Sanford D'Amato Scholarship
(Sanford Restaurant, Milwaukee, WI)

Two (2) $1,000 scholarships towards tuition for applicant from Milwaukee County, WI, entering the ACF (American Culinary Federation) apprenticeship program, through Milwaukee Area Technical College and ACF Chefs of Milwaukee, or WCTI Technical College.


 
Marcel Desaulniers Scholarship
(The Trellis,
Williamsburg , VA )

$1,000 scholarship towards tuition for applicant entering the Continuing Education Department two-semester Baking and Pastry Arts Certificate Program at the Culinary Institute of America,
Hyde Park , New York . Applicant must have worked in food service for 1-3 years and substantiate.


 
Chris Desens Scholarship
(The Racquet Club
Ladue , MO )

Two (2) $1,500 scholarships towards travel/restaurant apprenticeship for one week. Applicant must have resided in
St. Louis for a minimum of one year and substantiate residency.


Dry Creek Kitchen Scholarship, (
Healdsburg , CA )

$3,500 scholarship towards tuition at an accredited culinary school of the studentıs choice.

 
 
Alain Ducasse Scholarship
(Sponsored by Alain Ducasse)

$10,000 cash scholarship. The scholarship consists of a one-year apprenticeship with the team of Alain Ducasse - six (6) months in
Monaco and six (6) months at Ducasse in New York City . In addition to completing The James Beard Foundation Scholarship application and submitting two letters of recommendation, applicants must:

  • Have a working knowledge of the French language
  • Be a culinary school graduate and substantiate
  • Have a minimum of two years experience in a professional kitchen and substantiate
  • Submit a minimum of a 250-word essay describing "Why I Wish to Pursue French Culinary Training"



David Edgcumbe Scholarship

$1,000 scholarship towards tuition for a beginning student interested in teaching in the culinary field. Applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalent.



Clark Frasier Scholarship

Ogunquit , Maine )

Two (2) $1,650 scholarships towards tuition at an accredited school of studentıs choice. Applicant must be a resident of Maine , New Hampshire , Vermont , Massachusetts , Connecticut or Rhode Island and must substantiate.


 
Wally Joe Scholarship
(KC’s,
Cleveland , MS )

Two (2) $1,650 towards tuition at an accredited culinary school for applicants who are residents of
Mississippi , Tennessee , Arkansas or Louisiana , and substantiate residency.


 
Mark Kiffin Scholarship (The Compound,
Santa Fe , NM )

$3,500 scholarship towards tuition at an accredited culinary school of the studentıs choice.


 
Peter Kump Memorial Scholarship

$5,000 scholarship towards tuition at an accredited or licensed culinary school of student's choice. Applicant must submit a 500-word essay on culinary goals and how this scholarship can help attain them.



Bern Laxer Memorial Scholarship
(Within the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay (Florida), sponsored by Bern's Steak House in memory of Bern Laxer)

Three (3) $2,000 scholarships, sponsored by Bernıs Steak House in memory of Bern Laxer, towards tuition for students seeking careers in food service and hospitality management. One scholarship will be given in each of three programs ­ Culinary, Hospitality Management and Viticulture/Oenology. The program and school must be accredited in accordance with the James Beard Foundation scholarship criteria. Scholarship recipients may re-apply to continue scholarships for a maximum of four years. Each recipient will be required to submit an annual report to The Foundation which will include a current official school transcript during the most recent 12-month period. Re-applying recipients will receive priority consideration over new applicants provided they maintain a minimum B- average. Applicants must be a resident of Florida and substantiate; have a high school diploma or the equivalent; have a minimum of one year culinary experience either as a student or employee, and submit a minimum 500-word essay expressing his/her interest in a selected career in culinary, hospitality management or viticulture/oenology, and why the scholarship is deserved.


 
New York City Technical College Scholarship (Sponsored by Anne Nurse)

$1,000 towards tuition at New York Technical College .



Chef Walter Potenza Scholarship (Walterıs Restaurant,
Providence , RI )

$3,500 scholarship towards tuition at an accredited culinary school of the studentıs choice.



Rio Suite Hotel & Casino Scholarship
(Las Vegas, NV)

Five (5) $5,000 scholarships towards tuition at an accredited culinary school of student's choice. Applicant must submit a 500-word essay on culinary goals and how this scholarship can help attain them.



San Diego Gastronomically Correct Scholarship
(Sponsored by the
San Diego Gastronomically Correct Out-of-House Chefs)

$8,250 scholarship towards tuition divided equally for a two-year program at an accredited culinary school of applicantıs choice. Applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalent, show financial need and be accepted at culinary school.



Sia's Scholarship
(
Duluth , GA , sponsored by Chef Scott Serpas)

$3,800 scholarship towards tuition at an accredited culinary school. Applicant must be from
Georgia , Louisiana or Texas and substantiate residency. Applicant must be finishing the first year or beginning the second year of a minimum two-year program at an accredited culinary school. Applicant must submit a 500-word essay on their culinary goals and how this scholarship can help to attain them.



Rick Smilow Scholarship


$3,500 scholarship towards tuition for either the Culinary Arts or Baking & Pastry Arts Program at The Institute of Culinary Education (I.C.E.). Scholarship is awarded primarily on the basis of financial need. Applicant must be under the age of 25 with a minimum of two years full-time restaurant experience (must substantiate) and have been accepted for studies at I.C.E.



Allen Susser Scholarship
(Chef Allen's,
North Miami Beach , FL )

Four (4) $500 scholarships. Applicant must be a resident of Dade,
Palm Beach or Broward County and substantiate residency.

  1. $500 awarded to an applicant entering the Florida Culinary Institute, West Palm Beach , FL.
  2. $500 warded to an applicant entering Johnson & Wales University , North Miami , FL.
  3. $500 awarded to an applicant entering the Florida International University , Miami , FL.
  4. $500 awarded to an applicant entering The School of Culinary Arts at The Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Lauderdale , FL.



T. Cook's at The Royal Palms Scholarship
(Sponsored by Royal Palms Hotel,
Phoenix , AZ )

Two (2) $1,750 scholarships towards tuition at the Scottsdale Culinary Institute. Applicant must write a 500-word essay on why he/she should receive the scholarship.



Tribute Restaurant Scholarship
(
Farmington Hills , MI )
$3,750 scholarship towards tuition at an accredited culinary school of the student's choice.



TRU Scholarship, Chicago, IL)

$3,500 scholarship towards tuition at an accredited culinary school of the studentıs choice.



Jim Turner Memorial Scholarship for Viticulture & Enology

Up to $5,000 scholarship towards tuition for an undergraduate or graduate student studying or applying to study in the Department of Viticulture & Enology at the University of California, Davis. Preference will be given to graduate students. Applicant must have met admission requirements of the University of California , Davis , and maintain a 3.25 GPA (undergraduate or graduate) to continue to receive scholarship. Applicant must continue studies in the Department of Viticulture & Enology and substantiate with transcript of grades at the end of each quarter, and a copy of his/her class registration at the beginning of each semester. The amount of the scholarship will be determined by in-state or out-of-state residence and amount of unpaid tuition. Applicant must submit a 500-word essay describing his/her career goals.



The James Beard Foundation General Scholarships

Up to 30 scholarships valued at $1,000 and $2,000 each towards tuition at an accredited culinary school of studentıs choice. The amount of each scholarship will be at the discretion of the James Beard Foundation scholarship committee. Scholarship must be used in year 2003.



Zov's Bistro, Inc. Scholarship
